Third Time Charm Buffet

When I came across this vintage buffet (with matching china cabinet and draw leaf table), I knew I just had to have it. I’ve been desiring a harmonious set for our dining room for quite some time — albeit difficult to find one fitting for our moderate space.

Although charmed to have acquired such a unique set, little did I know how difficult I would find transforming it. My vision was CLEAR! Neutral, textured, worn and earthy! Shouldn’t be difficult right?!

❤ My FIRST attempt at achieving my vision:

  • Removed original hardware ~ while pondering whether to polish or paint
  • Thoroughly vacuumed and washed entire piece ~ certainly required before transforming any piece of preloved furniture
  • Applied 2 coats of Country Chic Paint in a 50:50 custom colour blend of ‘Sunday Tea’ and ‘Crinoline’ ~ a warm ‘greige’ tone blended with an almost pure white
  • Sanded entire piece down for a buttery smooth and slightly distressed finish ~ for the farmhouse chic look I adore and always strive for
  • Applied Country Chic Paint Natural Wax ~ which I find eases and tones down the application of dark wax
  • Applied Country Chic Paint Antiquing Wax ~ for a charming timeworn effect and some aging depth
  • Wasn’t at all happy with my outcome 😔  ~ so I called it a day, went to bed, and slept on it

❤ ❤ My SECOND endeavour:

  • Reinstalled hardware ~ decided that I think I’d like it best painted
  • Prepared myself to try something NOT recommended, but certainly not a crime ~ that being to paint over wax (turned out JUST fine)
  • Applied 1 coat of Country Chic Paint in the colour ‘Dark Roast’ ~ a very deep espresso bean brown colour
  • Applied 1 lightly brushed coat of Country Chic Paint in a 50:50 custom colour blend of ‘Sage Advice’ and ‘Vanilla Frosting’ ~ a cottage style sage green blended with a lovely farmhouse white
  • Applied some Country Chic Paint ‘Natural Wax’ and ‘Hemp Oil’ to areas where I wanted chipping to occur ~ a little extra help can go a long way
  • Applied 2 coats of Homestead House Milk Paint in the colour ‘Limestone’ ~ an old stone white with just a hint of earthen yellow
  • While the milk paint was still somewhat wet, I applied some heat with my heat gun ~ to force a crackling paint effect (a technique I’ve been aching to try… and gosh darn it works!)
  • Still wasn’t quite happy with my outcome 😞 ~ so I slept on it some more

❤ ❤ ❤ My THIRD time’s a charm process:

  • Applied 1 coat of Country Chic Paint in a 50:50 custom colour blend of ‘Sunday Tea’ and ‘Driftwood’ ~ a warm ‘greige’ tone blended with a muted earthy brown
  • Applied 1 coat of Country Chic Paint in the colour ‘Vanilla Frosting’ to the hardware ~ a lovely farmhouse white with just the perfect hint of warmth to it
  • Lightly sanded entire piece down ~ to bring through all the prior layers of colour and chipping texture
  • Chiselled areas where I wanted more chipping to occur ~ a lovely way to add more texture
  • Applied 2 coats of my 50:50 custom colour blend of ‘Sunday Tea’ and ‘Driftwood’ to the interior doors ~ cuz the inside wants to be pretty too
  • Applied Country Chic Paint Hemp Oil to the entire piece ~ for a light water-resistant protectant; sustainably sourced from our very own Canadian farmers
  • I guess it’s true that third time’s a charm 😌 ~ at least for this piece it most certainly proved to be

A neutral palette accented with soft sage walls, timeworn textures, quaint layers, crisp farmhouse whites, and pops of fresh and earthy greens. THAT is what I’ve been dreaming of and longing for our dining room. Despite my clear vision, I struggled with transforming this vintage buffet for our gathering space. Third time’s a charm” however proved to be true I’m ultra swooning over my outcome, and swimming in motivation to complete our dining makeover awakening.

* All of my furniture pieces are preloved, with expected signs of age and use — sweet imperfections which I believe adds to their unique character and charm.

❤ This Third Time Charm Buffet ~ Is for US ❤
DIMENSIONS: 36″ H x 48″ W x 18.5″ D

My envisioned colour for this piece turned out to be the MOST difficult colour to picture! Thus not as many photos as I would like to share. Although these pics are a very close capture, it’s simply one of those pieces that needs to be seen in person to appreciate its’ truest beauty.

I hope you visit again! My #farmlifebestlife awaits more simple living, generous loving and constant learning — graced with an abundance of country chic character and sweet imperfections, both for me and for YOU! ❤
