40 Will Be Fabulous

I’m like many other 30-something’s out there. Living through a ridiculously busy time of life, quite often feeling misunderstood and overwhelmed, and wondering if life will ever slow down… “I feel like my brain is a web browser and I have 2,857 tabs open all the time”… and amidst all the chaos, I wonder how it is that I got to be 39 years old so fast, and OMG I’m gonna be 40 next year!

I often hear that when people reach 40, they become a wreck. They want a party, they don’t want a party, they’re sad, they’re hysterical, they want to crawl under the covers, they go through a mid-life crisis, they hate 40. I on the other hand am all fired-up for 40! How can I not be?! By 40, we’ve learned a lot, know what we want, and we still have a lot we want to do and can do!

By 40 You’ve Learned…

That You’ll Be Fine

It is OK to fall down. It is OK to make mistakes, It is OK to take risks. You will live another day and you will be fine.

How to Say NO

At 40 you no longer pretend. You like the word NO and you say it a lot. For example… you get invited to a party and you don’t want to go… because at 40 you’re insanely busy, and you feel like you’re going to lose it if you have to do one more thing! You’ll find yourself saying “I should really go”, but you don’t need to go. You are busy that night, you are busy every night… don’t deny it.

So just say NO… the party will go on without you, and you just might get a few of those 20 loads of laundry done, you just might get some grocery shopping done so your family won’t starve, or you just might get the grass cut before having to put the cows out to mow it for you.

You Don’t Need a 100 Friends

Let’s face it, not everyone is going to like you and want to be your friend, and that’s OK. By age 40, you’ll be at peace with this. “I’m well aware that I’m not everyone’s cup of tea… but I’d rather be someone’s shot of tequila anyways.”

By 40 you’ll have shedded those who bring you down and surround yourself with the most positive and awesome people you know. You don’t have time to worry about the people who don’t like you anyways, cuz you’re much too busy loving the people that love you.

That Opinions Are Just Opinions

Your family is your family. You can’t escape them or trade them in for another family… and you certainly can’t change them… but you can change your response to them. By 40, you know when to shut your mouth, just let it be, and walk away silently… even if that means heading for a bottle of wine for which you will pour down your throat quickly while nobody’s watching.

That Rocking Out In Your Mini-Van is Very Cool

“Yes I rock out in my van, yes I’m aware that people can see me, and NO I don’t care.” I feel just as cool rocking out in my Toyota Sienna at 39, as I did at 17 in my Pontiac Grand Am… perhaps even cooler, and a whole lot smarter! 😉

What Makes Me Happy…

By 40 you certainly know what makes you happy… if you don’t, I don’t believe you. For me it’s the simple things:

  • hugs from my kids
  • cuddles with my hubs
  • fried chicken
  • rainy days
  • cold beer
  • newborn babies
  • afternoon naps
  • my girl’s amazing kindness and smile
  • my boy’s stubbornness, wit and charm
  • a long phone call with my Mom
  • cupcakes
  • Dauphin’s Countryfest
  • hot sun beating down on me
  • my husband’s love
  • gin & tonic with a squeeze of lime
  • a clean house
  • a pair of jeans that fit just right
  • harvest air
  • baby calves
  • a new pair of socks
  • to be called Mom
  • Jill & Lisa
  • gravel roads
  • brutally honest people
  • a visit with my Dad
  • a good steak
  • watching my children sleep
  • living on a farm
  • pecan pie
  • the smell of fresh cut grass
  • winter storms
  • frogs croaking
  • true friends
  • memories of my grandparents
  • wet kisses from my dogs
  • awesome family
  • a hot shower
  • my cat on my lap
  • paid bills

What I Want On My 40th Birthday…

  • A cake with 40 candles
  • An afternoon nap
  • A hug from my kids
  • My husband to still think I’m hot
  • A surprise present (yes, I want a present)

I do NOT want a surprise party, and my closest family and friends know this… and they know me well enough to know that if they did go against my wishes and throw me one, I won’t be there! I don’t like surprises, I don’t like unexpected guests, and I would HATE a surprise party. I need time to prepare for a party, I need an outfit that will fit me and look somewhat presentable, and I most certainly need to make sure that I’ll have enough limes for my gin & tonics.

What I Wanna Do After 40…

40 will be a great time to reflect on what I’ve accomplished (had a great childhood, survived my teenage years, married the most amazing man, met a career goal I never thought I’d reach, built an awesome family… and figured out that drinking gin and taking long naps makes me a much happier person).

I’m almost 40, I’m healthy and somewhat fit, my mind is still pretty sharp, and I’ve still got a long way to go and a whole lot of things I wanna do. As 40 draws-near, it’s good time to check-in on my bucket-list:

  • Fall In Love
  • Marry A Good Man
  • Have Babies
  • Own and Drive a Volkswagen Beetle
  • Get A Great Job
  • Plant a Tree
  • Go to The Ellen Show
  • Do Something That Terrifies Me
  • Go to The Oprah Winfrey Show √ √
  • Work From Home
  • Start a Blog
  • See Willie Nelson Live
  • Start Running
  • Get Paid For Doing Something I Love Doing √
  • Run an Entire 5K
  • Run a 5K Race
  • Run a Marathon (or walk it)
  • Plant a Garden
  • Work at The Apple Store
  • Drive a Combine
  • Take An Entire Summer Off
  • Go Back to School
  • Swim In An Ocean
  • See My Children Graduate
  • Go To Vegas √ √ √
  • See My Children Fall in Love and Get Married
  • Travel to Another Country
  • Dance the Coyote Ugly Bar
  • Get a Tattoo
  • Hold My Grandchildren

An ambitious bucket-list… not really. A realistic one… I’d like to think so. Will it grow… hell yes. Will I check them all off… I sure hope so. Am I thankful for the one’s I have checked off already… EXTREMELY!

Now back to my 39 year-old life… soon to be 40 year-old life… that I know will for sure be FABULOUS, and that I’ll be so thankful to have reached! 🙂
